Ayurveda translates into “the science or knowledge of life”, it is a HOLISTIC system of health + well being. It dates back to over five thousand years with a focus on maintaining health through balance of MIND + BODY.
These elements are found throughout the Universe as well as within our physical, mental + emotional qualities. AYURVEDA uses these elements as a guide when customizing each woman’s postpartum plan.
Each of the 5 Elements are combined to form the 3 DOSHAS.
VATA – (air + ether) . PITTA – (fire + water) . KAPHA – (earth + water)
We each carry some of the 3 DOSHAS however, there is one sometimes two that are more dominant. This is what makes up the Ayurvedic constitution.
When the Doshas are in BALANCE, health is created and well-being is maintained.
Of the 3 DOSHAS, Vata is the one that is the most impacted during pregnancy + the postpartum period. This is where your Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula comes in!
VATA representing AIR + ETHER or SPACE
Is increased during labor as the strength of the uterus moves the baby down. After birth the space that once housed the baby is now empty (AIR) which attributes to Vata imbalances as well.
The main focus of an Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula is to bring the VATA Dosha back into BALANCE.
This is best supported through the specialized care of of an Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula with focus on REST, NOURISHMENT, MINDFULNESS + SELF-CARE through herbal baths + abhyanga massage for the new mother.
It has been said that the “42 days postpartum sets the stage for the next 42 years of a woman’s life”.
This time is to be cherished, honored and spent “Mothering the mother”.
VATA Dosha- Air + Ether
A woman’s body experiences tremendous change during PREGNANCY, BIRTH + POSTPARTUM. She is not only experiencing powerful hormonal shifts, but deep physical + emotional changes as well.
When a woman receives consistent physical, mental and emotional support during this fragile time, she is able to fully expand into motherhood + bond deeply with her baby.
